Liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a disease caused by growth of malignant cells in the liver. It is also designated as "primary" liver cancer because it originates in the liver itself.  "Secondary" liver cancer, on the other hand, develops when cells from malignant tumors in other organs (for example, stomach or bowel cancer) spread to the liver and form metastases there. Primary and secondary liver tumors differ fundamentally in their clinical course and treatment. Only primary liver cancer will be discussed in the following.
